David S. Liebeskind, MD, MBA, is a neurologist with Keck Medicine of USC who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of stroke. A world-renowned expert in neurovascular and stroke neurology, he serves as co-director of the USC Neurovascular Center. He treats patients with a broad range of cerebrovascular disorders, ranging from carotid disease to unusual causes of stroke.
Dr. Liebeskind is passionate about combining his scientific research and clinical expertise in cerebrovascular disorders to help improve outcomes for all stroke patients. For over two decades, he has led global efforts to advance data science and precision medicine for stroke prevention, acute therapies and recovery. Areas of particular interest include cerebral venous thrombosis, arterial dissection, moyamoya syndrome and causes of stroke in young patients.
After earning his medical degree at New York University, Dr. Liebeskind completed his internship in medicine at Beth Israel Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center) in Boston. He moved on to a neurology residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he then completed a fellowship in stroke and cerebrovascular disease. In 2023, he resumed his studies at UCLA and in 2025 earned an MBA with an emphasis on health care innovation.
Dr. Liebeskind serves as a visiting professor of neurology, neurological surgery and radiology in the Department of Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. His research includes novel neuroimaging approaches to provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental pathophysiology of cerebrovascular disease. Among his leadership roles, he previously served as past-president of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology and past-president of the American Society of Neuroimaging.
Dr. Liebeskind has received numerous research awards, and as a practitioner he has been named to lists including “Best Doctors in America,” “Who’s Who in America” and Los Angeles Magazine’s “Top Doctors.”
