Genioglossus Advancement

Genioglossus Advancement

Genioglossus advancement is a procedure that addresses the tongue and its tendency to fall backwards and block the breathing space in obstructive sleep apnea. The genioglossus is the major muscle of the tongue, and it attaches on the inside of the mandible (lower jaw bone). Genioglossus advancement involves making small cuts in the mandible to capture the attachment of the genioglossus muscle and move it forward. This effectively moves the anchoring point of the muscle forward, creating more room for the tongue to relax during sleep without causing sleep apnea.
