Neck dissection

Neck dissection

When thyroid cancer spreads, it typically spreads to the lymph nodes in the neck, first. When thyroid cancer spreads to the lymph nodes, they are removed at the time of surgery (thyroidectomy). The neck is separated into compartments; which lymph nodes need to be removed depends on which compartments are at risk of harboring thyroid cancer metastases. Your thyroid surgeon will discuss the appropriate time, if any, to include a neck dissection as part of your treatment for thyroid cancer.
